METAPHORS
To really understand and apply the hero's journey, you must understand the terminology is sometimes literal and metaphorical.
For example:
In fairy tales they are aware that recognize that "the hero battles often a dragon before seizing a Treasure. "
In a literal sense, which would be charged with similar stories (2006) Eragon, where literally a hero battles a dragon.
But metaphorically, the  "Dragon" is an obstacle to a treasure " one "is something that the values of the hero.
For example, in When Harry Met Sally (1989), Harry Sally should help overcome her ex-boyfriend before he can kiss and sleep with her.

In The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Han, Leia and others are tormented by Vader until Lucas arrives. In Goldfinger (1964), Bond is taken hostage and overlap in nearly half by a laser.
Out of the frying pan into the fire. Often, the hero escapes death a close only to face another. In (1992) Unforgiven, fever almost killed Clint Eastwood after the beating. In Star Wars (1977), Lucas et al are compressed by the trash compactor, after Lucas almost dies at the hands of the Serpent.

The hero, though he (or she) may be prepared, often not easily commit to the trip. In Bonnie and Clyde (1967), Bonnie wants to know what is as armed robbery.
