Mississippi River
Mississippi River

In pre-Columbian times, the area that is today the state of Louisiana was home to many indigenous peoples of America. This including Atakapas, Chitmacha, Bayougoula, Houma, Avoyelles, Caddo and Tunica.

The first Europeans to visit the region were Spanish explorers the 16th century. In 1528, the expedition of Panfilo de Narvaez visited the mouth of the Mississippi River, and in 1541, Hernando de Soto crossed the region. The French began to arrive in late 17th century and quickly established settlements. Robert Cavelier de La Salle named the region "Louisiana" in honor of French King Louis XIV in 1682. And a settlement, Fort Maurepas, was established in 1699 (which is now Ocean Springs, Mississippi, near Biloxi.

The French colony of Louisiana included the land on both sides of the Mississippi River and extended all the way to Canada, including all or part of the States present the following days: Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota and North Dakota.

After the Seven Years War (generally known in the U.S. that the "French and Indian War" of control) in most areas east of the Mississippi River except New Orleans area transmitted to the Colombia and the rest of Louisiana became a French colony of Spain. During this period, the French-speaking refugees from Acadia (colonies French Canada and New England), arrived in Louisiana which is now the south-west, their descendants, and became known as the Cajun people.

In 1800, France acquired Louisiana from Spain in a secret treaty, however, three years, in 1803, the territory has been sold in the United States in the purchase Louisiana.

The United States of Louisiana, divided into two parts: the Orleans Territory (which became the State of Louisiana in 1812), and District of Louisiana (which was every other land acquired in the Louisiana Purchase).

A border dispute arose between the U.S. and Spain on West Florida, with the Spaniards insist that this region had not been sold to France in 1800. But meanwhile, the British colonists were installed in the region, and revolted against Spain in 1810, forming the short-lived Republic of West Florida, which then been annexed by the United States (Florida and became parishes in Louisiana) by presidential proclamation.

Why the French offer of Louisiana, United States? And what do you Jefferson contorti the Mississippi River?

YYEAH help me if please! 1 – Why We offer French in Louisiana (Louisiana Purchase) 2 – Why Thomas Jefferson want to control the Mississippi River?

1) In 1802, the British violated the Treaty of Amiens, bringing a new war with France inevitable. In 1803, Napoleon decided to have Building a new flotilla to invade the United Kingdom. These circumstances have led Napoleon to abandon his intention to rebuild the French Empire in the New World. 2) Thomas Jefferson was disturbed by Napoleon's plans to restore the French colonies in America. With the possession of New Orleans Napoleon could close the Mississippi to U.S. commerce at any time. With New Orleans under U.S. control, the future areas of North would no longer be in doubt due to immigration from the American West can not contain. Search Jefferson Valley Missouri River and further to determine if the Northwest-water route to the Pacific Ocean could find the possible relationship (with only minor land portage) the Missouri River with the Columbia. He wanted to know about Indian languages (and) more over the command of the Dakota, the longitude and latitude rivers their source, and the animals and plants unique to the West, including soil fertility. Although the desire to discover a Northwest Passage, western Pacific and the award Later the Missouri and Columbia rivers, is the focus on exploratory Jefferson, Jefferson was also interested in the tributaries of the Mississippi in southern Missouri, especially Arkansas and Red.
