Makoto Fujimura, a contemporary artist of the 21st century, was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1960. His father was a scientist and his mother, an educator creative. Makoto graduated from Bucknell University in 1983. Winner of a scholarship from the Japanese government, the artist received his Masters and his Ph.D. from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 1989. Fujimura seven years at the University of Tokyo would get an expert involved in the combination of fine art and abstract expressionism with the traditional Japanese art of Nihonga.
Makoto founded the International Arts Movement (IAM) in 1990, which hosts an annual conference in February in New York, and is frequented by people of Dana Gioia (poet, president of the NEA) Patricia Heaton (actor), Rob Mathes Band, Miroslav Volf (Yale University theologian), Elaine Scarry (author, Harvard University) and Daniel Libeskind (architect). After a building built in Japan, Fujimura moved to the United States, but continued to travel between New York and Tokyo for their performances. In 1992 he became the youngest artist ever had a piece bought by the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo.
One of the best work of Fujimura is "The splendor of the Orient" a collection of pictures using stone-ground minerals such as azurite, malachite, cinnabar, mixed with glue from animal skins is applied the handmade paper.
