Generations – Sharing Space in the Workplace
What are the generation gap?
The corporate America is the same today as 20 years ago? No, that's what you believe that 10 years ago, the same as that you do today? Probably not. Or consider someone who is 20 years old today. Is he or she have different perceptions of anyone currently in 60 years? Probably yes. These differences in attitudes, values, beliefs and even forms of communication work together and are called "Generation of the lakes." Generational differences may lead to misunderstandings and conflicts in the workplace.
For the first time ever, companies are faced with managing four generations in the workplace. This may cause problems! Would you be surprised if you were to greet a candidate for the position in the hall and saw that he brought his mother along? What is happening in businesses across countries in recent college graduates seeking their first job. Or how would you react if a newly hired administrator, and when asked an employee who had been with the company for 30 years to make the information we just discussed in an Excel spreadsheet and email you, the employee looked as if you were from another planet? This is also more common than you might imagine.
The Generations defined
Generations will call each of which is known by many nicknames, mature, Baby Boomers, Generation X and Millennium. Each of the four generations has its own history that shapes attitudes, values, beliefs, work habits and communication styles. Of course, descriptions of generations and time must be interpreted somewhat loosely to avoid stereotyping. However, there are some commonalities in response to life experiences that have shaped the values of and individual perceptions of group work.
Matures (born before 1946) have generally respected the authority and compliance and raised in a traditional family model. They are committed to duty, honor and country. This generation faces difficult times before prosperity. For them, college was a dream and communication, which used a telephone dial and handwritten letters sent to U.S. E-mail. Matures include Tom Brokaw, Jack Nicholson, recent Grammy Award winner Herbie Hancock and Senator John McCain. Mature represent about 5% of workplaces.
At work, these employees have a strong work ethic and a "self-sacrifice for attitude that "the team. They do not seek individual recognition, but we prefer the mixture into the computer. For them, a good job is his own reward.
Baby boomers (born 1946-1964) are optimistic, although that has developed so that the traditional family dissolves. For them, the college has been given. Communication is done by touch-tone telephones and word processors have been used to prepare letters sent by U.S. Mail. Many baby boomers are defined by their work and must pay their dues. It starts work for large companies and slowly climbed the ladder. Consequently, this generation currently comprises the vast majority of entrepreneurs and leaders of the workplace. The baby boomers are Bill Gates, chairman of Microsoft, IBM CEO Sam Palmisano, Oprah Winfrey, George W. Bush, Hillary Clinton and Madonna.
Some suggestions for managing the baby-boomers who are evaluating the concept of team and give time deal. They are not necessarily feedback individual performance, but do not appreciate public recognition with plaques, awards and certificates. Consider the fact that baby boomers May find it difficult to inform the young employees who do not "put in their time" or "only interested in the results."
Generation X (born 1965-1979) employees feel more comfortable challenging the authority of its groups of older age, perhaps because they were witnesses to public embarrassment and political entrepreneurs who violates rules. They learned at a young age that happy endings do not always occur. Many of them grew up with both parents working and point of view often a college education as a "means to get there." This group communicates via the PC and mobile phones. Famous Generation X are Tiger Woods, Angelina Jolie, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page.
Generation X does not live to work, work for a living. Unlike their older colleagues, who feel that their own time and the rental company what it needs. Generation X Employees Retirement rarely a company to get the gold watch, but often change jobs to build a repertoire of skills and experiences that are portable. His greatest fear is it could be achieved stagnant.
When managing Generation X employees, giving them much projects and communicate the desired results instead of spending a lot of time in the process. Generation X employees respond well when given the resources necessary and the opportunity to prove it. Delegate for results instead of detailing the individual tasks to achieve.
Generation Y (born after 1979) are primarily social and socialized with the families grew and merged into the mall. They see the university as very costly and many do not know that cell phones, instant messaging and the Internet. This generation witnessed the terrorist attack against America and shootings in schools. They are not adults or adolescents, but rather in a adultolescent phase. For Generation Y, the future is a short term. Millennials are the famous founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears and LeBron James.
At work, enjoy a collaborative environment and can look to make friends with their managers. They are extremely knowledgeable and creative technology and having a close (some say too close in May) with the family, even as adults. They crave the information and want to know how they fit into an organization.
When managing the generation Y, note that many have grown up in the menus of your business allowing them to make choices without doing research. They may think, "if the Internet must be true and if not, I do not need for my work in the long term. "This led to a lack of critical thinking that other groups take for granted. Therefore, the delegation of specific tasks may improve the results. Be prepared to clarify your company's values and culture, and how they contribute the large canvas.
Bridging the gap?
At the head of a department or a team of four different generations may need at least four different management styles. For example, a manager Boomer can be frustrated by an employee of Millennium, which stop working every day at the scheduled time of departure, because the director Boomer long hours of waiting at work while Millennium is looking for paid work / life balance. Here are some tips for managing labor between the generations of today:
· Administrators can not agree more with his own value system. Instead, you must manage with the system values of each employee.
• When conflicts arise, the personal prejudices must be discontinued. Please be objective, understand the communication and working style of each person and manage depending on the situation and people involved.
· Remember that the past experiences an employee can not be amended, if the employee is greater, the millennium, or something in between.
· Administrators must understand and recognize the validity of values for each generation.
• What can be changed, however, is how a manager who motivates employees. An employee of the Generation X May want time off for a good job, while a Boomer may want a plaque or public recognition. Ask your employees what motivates them and reward them accordingly.
· Use the strengths of each generation for the benefit of the team. For example, mature teach and mentor Boomers Generation X and Generation Y. Its institutional wisdom is precious and life experiences add colorful examples. To encourage the generation X and Y to help their colleagues more mature technology.
The motivation effective multi-generational team allows an administrator to take all the strengths of its team. All team members must work together cooperatively and remain centered on the same objectives. It is also important to understand that other beliefs are not better nor worse, just different. After all, people with different perspectives still have the potential to bring thoughts and ideas different team, and the resulting product can be much higher than the product of a more homogenous group.
