Two of the most former colonies of artists in the United States are Cape Ann, a colony of rock art in the neck of Gloucester and Bearskin Neck in Rockport.
Cape Ann is a Mecca for artists and art lovers worldwide. Cape Ann has inspired art and artists with an amazing diversity of styles. Cape Ann is a point of pilgrimage for artists to watch, but during the next one hundred years has become an attraction for artists. If it's Impressionist and modern art Cape Ann was an artist who could not resist the attraction. To mention just some few American artists of the mid century nineteenth far, Fitz Hugh Lane, Francisco Silva, Winslow Homer, John Twachtman, Childe Hassam, Edward Potthast, Edward Hopper, Stuart Davis, Marsden Hartley and Mark Rothko. These artists have been attracted to Cape Ann for its majestic landscapes, beaches of fine sand, granite quarries, old ships and green forests the region and how the color has changed the nature of the long season. Cape Ann art not only housing painters, but also other artists such as jewelry designers, potters, sculptures and photographers.
